3. Introducing our February (almost Valentine's
Day author), Rachel Bo
Interviewed by Treva Harte
Tell us
about yourself in 50 words or less.
Rachel Bo lives in Texas, where her husband and daughters are
constantly sidestepping the bubbles of fantasy that percolate
from her ears. Thomas the Rhymer, a Basilisk, and the White Rabbit
all live with her as well, and Nessie makes frequent appearances
in their back yard pond. Rachel has yet to tame a Dragon, but
is currently scouring junkyards for her own personal Guardian.
If you could be any other writer, who would it be and why?
Patricia McKillip. I love her fantasies - her voice is so lyrical,
her prose very beautiful.
What are your writing plans for this year and what have you done
most recently?
I'll be doing a new series for Loose Id featuring the wolfies
introduced in my story for the RATED: X-MAS anthology, which I'm
really excited about - I love mythology! I'll also be continuing
my Guardians series - this is gonna' be HOT guys - gargoyles and
vampires and demons, oh my! AND the Enigma series for Changeling
also continues. And I'll be appearing in an anthology in late
summer, early fall for Ellora's Cave entitled MYTH- BEHAVIN',
and lots more!
What is the process you use when you first start to write a story-or
do you use any process at all? If you could do it differently,
how would you do it?
I very much let my muse guide me. A story usually comes to me
in the form of one central idea, scene, or character at first.
Then I ruminate on it (while my family dodges those bubbles my
husband tells me pour from my ears when I'm in 'writer' mode)
until I have a fairly good idea of what's going to happen throughout
the novel. Basically an outline, but not one that I write down
- it's all in my head.
If
I could do it differently, I'd write a complete story every week
that needs absolutely no editing, sell each of them to the very
first publisher I approached for the exact contract terms I want,
and be a household name by the end of the year! (Hey, as long
as I'm dreaming - might as well dream BIG!)
Since it's just the second month of the new year, have you
made any resolutions? Have you stuck to them? Anything
romantic happen for Valentine's?
LOLOLOL! No resolutions - no way, no how! I'm a bit of a perfectionist,
but at the same time can be terribly disorganized, which means
that if I don't live up to my resolution (something that often
happens due to the disorganization thing), I spend eleven months
feeling guilty about it - which is very counter-productive, so
I don't do that to myself anymore!
My
DH is working on Valentine's Day, so unfortunately the only romance
happenin' will be between the covers of whatever book I choose
to console myself with that night! .
What's something you haven't done yet that you've always wanted
to do?
Well, I haven't ALWAYS wanted to do it, but I've got a terrible
crush on Arnold Vosloo - also known as Imhotep? I've never really
been one of those people that's just dying to meet someone famous...but
if he just happened to be in town, and we just happened to meet
and hit it off...Mm-mm-mm...gotta' go now - must write steamy
sex scene with absolutely gorgeous bald man!
